ABOUT ESPACE AND CAP-ESPACE PROGRAM

Le programme ESPACE est unique au Québec et l’un des rares visant à la fois les adultes et les enfants de niveaux préscolaire et primaire. Le programme comprend 3 types d’ateliers inter-reliés. Ces ateliers sont offerts au personnel du milieu visité, ensuite aux parents et adultes, et enfin à l’ensemble des enfants d’une école, d’un milieu de garde, d’un groupe de loisir, de sport ou d’un autre milieu de vie.

L’impact des ateliers ESPACE a été évalué et les résultats de ces recherches sont concluants. Ils ont fait l’objet de plusieurs publications scientifiques au Québec et ailleurs.

Le programme ESPACE est offert par les organismes ESPACE et est le moyen privilégié de prévention de TOUTES les formes de violence pouvant atteindre les enfants. Le programme est offert aux enfants de 3 ans à 12 ans et aux adultes dans différents milieux de vie (écoles, services de garde, organismes de loisirs et de sports, etc.).

All staff and children receive the booklet Activities book to complement the CAP-ESPACE program. Which is useful for continuing the children’s violence prevention education.

Children’s workshop

The children’s workshop are adapted for the various age groups according to five levels:

  • Daycare
  • Kindergarten
  • Elementary Cycle 1
  • Elementary Cycle 2
  • Elementary Cycle 3

The workshop all use the same vocabulary with regard to the basic notions and strategies taught. However, they differ in the role-play situations presented, and offer more specific information for certain concepts according to the children’s level of cognitive development.

  • Aggressors’ tricks and strategies
  • Various aspects of violence
  • Problem solving
  • Effective prevention strategies

During the workshop a team of facilitators encourages the children’s active participation, enabling them to practice the prevention strategies discussed and ensure their comprehension.

By participating in the CAP-ESPACE workshop, the children come to develop an assertive attitude, leading to safer behaviours. What’s more, they learn concrete strategies for staying safe. Children are less vulnerable to violence if they can:

  • Identify their rights and those of others;
  • Assert themselves, say no to protect their rights or when they feel they are in danger;
  • Turn to friends for support;
  • Ask trusted adults for help;
  • Use self-defence when necessary

 

 

Individual meetings 

After the workshop, the children have a free period and, on a voluntary basis, are invited to individually meet with one of the facilitators. This is a privileged time to answer any questions they might have, verify their comprehension of the subjects discussed during the workshop and, if necessary, offer them support or even refer them to the proper resource if they need help.

ESPACE privilégie l’approche par milieux de vie en sensibilisant l’ensemble des adultes et des enfants qui s’y trouvent. Dans le milieu de l’enfant, ESPACE est une force qui rassemble et mobilise les énergies des parents, du personnel des milieux éducatifs et des intervenants sociaux, scolaires et communautaires pour créer des réseaux d’entraide.

Notre travail de sensibilisation et de mobilisation des communautés via le milieu de vie des enfants s’inscrit dans une perspective de changement social, essentiel afin d’éliminer la violence, ou, du moins, faire que les milieux de vie deviennent minés pour les agresseurs.

Plusieurs outils (cahiers d’activités, guide pratique à l’intention des parents) sont remis aux enfants, au personnel éducatif et aux parents par les organismes ESPACE. Les milieux scolaires et de la petite enfance ont accès à la série Droits au coeur de l’ONF. Des courts métrages d’animation parfait pour les enfants.

Our vision

Our vision : A Quebec where preventing of all forms of violence against children is a collective priority.

Where the whole community rallies behind ESPACE, that it sees, hears and talks about violence against children. That it feels responsible of the present and future safety and well being of all children, it’s children.

Where children have safer living environments. That always more abusers are reported.

Where together we make sure that always less and less children fall victims to violence and have to suffer it’s consequences

That always more children are able to have a safe childhood, free from violence.

At ESPACE, every action tends to offer children the chance to have a safe childhood, free from violence. It is our purpose, our daily commitment.

Preventing violence is not only giving children the tools they need to protect themselves against all forms of violence but also, and greatly, to raise awareness with adults on what their role is in prevention and equip them in helping children.

Values

Feminism : The feminist movement aims on the recognition and respect of women’s rights and, at a larger scale, tends towards equality of every person’s rights in the respect of differences. The subsequent approach seeks to develop empowerment among people by giving them the tools they need to assert themselves in all aspects of their life. For ESPACE, it is possible to develop empowerment in the children  and their surrounding communities.  Feminist analysis also establishes links between abuses committed are acts of domination, oppression enforced by a person that is in a position of power, authority towards person.

The commitment to the values of independent community action is as important: the promotion of individual and collective self-reliance, a democratic functioning and the militant commitment with a view to bring about social change.

Principles that underlie the action of ESPACE

  • Children are persons in their own rights, that are not only the society’s future, but also its present;
  • Children have the right to feel safe, strong and free;
  • Children have the right to have their integrity respected, no matter their age, gender, race, ethnic origin, religion, etc., as enacted in the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1989;
  • In general, children have the potential to resolve their difficulties;
  • The children’s protection is first and foremost the responsibility of their parents, but also these of all the adults of their community;
  • Adults have the responsibility to believe children, to take seriously their cries for help, and to accompany and support them in their initiative to solve their problems;
  • The abuser has the sole responsibility of the acts of violence he or she commits;
  • The preventive action needs to aim towards developing empowerment in children, adults and their living environments;

Nous sommes l’une des rares organisation à aborder directement le thème de la violence faite aux enfants, sous toutes ses formes, en reconnaissant la concomitance des différentes formes de violence.

Le programme ESPACE est unique au Québec et l’un des rares visant à la fois les adultes et les enfants de niveaux préscolaire et primaire.

Nous croyons en la capacité d’agir des enfants et des adultes qui les entourent. Nous outillons concrètement ceux-ci à reconnaitre la violence, à reconnaitre un agresseur potentiel, à mettre en action des stratégies. En favorisant des rapports égalitaires par le développement du respect de soi et des autres, notre approche permet aux enfants de développer des stratégies qui leur serviront toute leur vie.

L’impact des ateliers ESPACE a été évalué et les résultats de ces recherches sont concluants. Ils ont fait l’objet de plusieurs publications scientifiques au Québec et ailleurs.

Le ROEQ met son expertise à profit dans le cadre de projets de recherches, de groupes de travail intersectoriels provinciaux, de colloques, congrès, ou encore contribue à des consultations d’organismes extérieurs au Québec qui sont intéressés par l’approche d’ESPACE.

Here are some of the results of the research on the CAP-ESPACE program.

95% of the children enjoyed the workshop.

96%  of the children would like ESPACE to com back again.

76% of the children. said that following the workshop they spoke about a program with their parents.

98,1% of pantes who participated specidied that the workshop met their expectations and that the information received was useful.

Following the workshop, close to half the parents reported an increase in the frequency of the following behaviours: the child appears to have greater self-confidence, expresses their like ant dislikes, resolves conflicts, is more assertive and independent.

The vast majority of parents felt that their participation in the workshop helped them communiate with their chlidren on the subject of assault.

The Prix annuel Desjardins de l’éducation was awarded to the ROEQ for the excellence of its educative program in preventing violence against children.

The Prix d’excellence Persillier-Lachapelle in the category of promotion-prevention, awarded by the Minister of Health as Social Services, highlights the excellence of community groups.

Regroupement des organismes ESPACE du Québec – ROEQ

ROEQ’s main actions

Support the consolidation of the ESPACE organizations members of the ROEQ and the implementation of ESPACE organizations throughout Quebec;

Share the expertise developed regarding prevention of violence against children and collaborate with different networks: community-based, research, government, public, etc.;

Collaborate with all the different medias to raise awareness and inform the general population on the issue of violence prevention against children and the possible solutions;

Conceive not only training and evaluation tools but also raising awareness;

Appeal to all the different actors in the community (government, ministries, schools, organizations) when deemed necessary.

ROEQ’s Mission

That always more children are able to have a safe childhood, free from violence. le ROEQ vise à renforcer les organismes ESPACE du Québec et les soutenir dans leurs actions vouées à prévenir la violence faite aux enfants. Il regroupe et accrédite les organismes ESPACE au Québec, et s’assure du respect des valeurs, des principes et de l’analyse qui doivent sous-tendre les actions d’ESPACE.

Le ROEQ voit à maintenir un programme éducatif de qualité qui répond aux besoins des enfants et des adultes du Québec ainsi qu’aux exigences des milieux de vie des enfants en matière de prévention de toutes les formes de violence. Guidé par le but de rejoindre toujours plus d’enfants et d’adultes au Québec, il travaille à développer les outils de prévention et de promotion d’ESPACE, de son programme et des organismes.

Le ROEQ demeure au fait de l’actualité et des développements touchant de près son champ d’action, appuie des actions communautaires en lien avec sa mission, et représente ESPACE auprès des instances gouvernementales.

You would to established an ESPACE organization certified by the ROEQ?

Step 1: Communicate with the ROEQ

Consequently the coordinating team will be able to tell you if an organization already exists in your region or if they are presently implementing an organization.

The ROEQ supports and guides any new organization every step of the way and is also responsible to ensure the training of the team according to the certification process in effect at the ROEQ.

Step 2: The concertation

Assembling a group if adults that wants to implicate themselves to set up a resource dedicated to prevention.

Step 3: Rooted into the community

Get the support of the different actors in the community (other community organizations, Youth Center, CLSC ou CISSS, schools, daycares, etc.)

Step 4: Implementation

Find the necessary funding to ensure a minimum of permanent personnel. Start the incorporation procedures of a non-profit organization. Build the future team of facilitators and start the ESPACE training. Reach out to the general population so that your organization becomes known to them and raise awareness in the community about the issue of violence against children in order to get them involved and mobilised.

 

Funding

Because the ROEQ does not have sufficient funding, it cannot financially support the implementation of a new organization. The organization itself needs to obtain the necessary financial support through diverse resources within its region.

The main sources of funding can be: Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux (programme de soutien aux organismes communautaires ), Centraide, Service Clubs, Foundations, Religious Orders, Fund-raising activities ans events, etc.
